• By the 1980’s, tens of thousands performed on patients with symptoms of a stroke

• 1988- NASCET was begun to evaluate the usefulness of CEA versus the best medical therapy in Symptomatic Pts

• 1991-Reported in the New England Journal of Medicine

  • CEA is beneficial for patients with symptoms of a stroke who have carotid stenosis > 70%
